Oncology Best Practices: Advances in Lung and Colorectal Cancers

Union League Café
New Haven, CT
Sep 9, 2008

Conference Overview

Conference Description & Purpose

The Oncology Best Practices: Advances in Lung Cancer and Colorectal Cancer meeting is designed to be an easily accessible interactive educational activity for local and community oncologists. This meeting will review the most recent clinical data on and practice standards for the management of advanced lung and colorectal cancers. Due to rapid changes in new chemotherapeutic regimens, novel formulations of existing agents, and the introduction of targeted biologic agents, physicians must be continually updated on the latest developments in the therapy of lung and colorectal cancers in order to maximize their ability to manage the treatment of their patients. This meeting will feature case-based lectures by regional and/or national thought leaders to maximize physician learning and application of new knowledge to clinical practice.

Target Audience

This educational program is directed toward medical oncologists interested in reviewing the most recent clinical trial data on the treatment of lung and colorectal cancers. Fellows, oncology nurses, oncology physician assistants, and pharmacists interested in the treatment of these cancers are also invited to attend.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this meeting, you should be able to:

  • Describe the current options in frontline therapy, including cytotoxic and targeted agents, for advanced-stage NSCLC
  • Apply the use of pharmacogenomic information as well as molecular markers to select optimal therapeutic regimens for NSCLC
  • Enumerate active agents used in the treatment of relapsed NSCLC and evaluate the efficacy and safety of each
  • Determine the impact of commonly used regimens for NSCLC on patient quality of life
  • Debate the pros and cons of oral and intravenous fluoropyrimidines, sequential and combination chemotherapy, and continuous and intermittent chemotherapy for metastatic colorectal cancer
  • Integrate the use of biologic agents, such as anti-EGFR and anti-VEGF agents, into combination treatment with chemotherapy for previously untreated or refractory metastatic colorectal cancer based on recommendations from analyzed clinical trial results
