New Developments in Breast Cancer

Dallas/Addison Marriott Quorum by the Galleria
Dallas, TX
Sep 20, 2008

Conference Overview

Summary and Purpose

The New Developments in Breast Cancer symposium will address critical issues concerning decision making for and treatment of patients with breast cancer, with an emphasis on new data presented at recent major international oncology meetings. The goal of this symposium is to update oncologists on the latest data in a format that allows them to apply the information to the optimal care of patients. Controversial and emerging topics will be addressed, including specific adjuvant and neoadjuvant therapies for defined clinical situations, the evolving role of HER2-targeted agents in the treatment of both early-stage and advanced/metastatic breast cancer, and emerging biologic and cytotoxic agents under evaluation for the treatment of metastatic breast cancer. In addition, novel diagnostic and predictive tools for the assessment of risk and optimization of therapy will be reviewed. New strategies and novel agents under investigation for the management of treatment-related adverse events will also be discussed. Case presentations and panel discussions will allow participants to discuss current controversies in the treatment of breast cancer with the faculty.

Target Audience

This educational program is directed toward medical, surgical, and radiation oncologists who treat patients with breast cancer. Physician assistants, research nurses, and fellows with an interest in the treatment of breast cancer are also invited to attend.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this symposium, you should be able to:
  • Identify and apply the most recent data on the treatment of breast cancer from major international oncology meetings
  • Describe the utility of genomic assays and other new diagnostic tools for the assessment of recurrence risk, treatment benefit, and decision making in order to optimize individual outcomes
  • Discuss the optimal choices of adjuvant chemotherapy or endocrine therapy, including dosing, scheduling, duration, and regimen selection, in defined clinical situations for the individualized treatment of patients with early-stage breast cancer
  • Determine the optimal use of and patient selection criteria for HER2targeted agents in early-stage breast cancer
  • Evaluate options for the treatment of HER2+ metastatic breast cancer, including HER2targeted antibodies, small-molecule tyrosine kinase inhibitors, and newer agents such as heat shock protein 90 inhibitors and immunoconjugates
  • Discuss the integration of antiangiogenic agents into metastatic treatment regimens
  • Assess the value of emerging chemotherapeutic agents, including epothilones, other novel microtubule inhibitors, and new formulations of conventional cytotoxic agents, currently being investigated as therapies for breast cancer
  • Review new data on the use of bone-targeted agents for the prevention or treatment of bone loss and for the reduction of distant recurrence
