Oncology Best Practices: Advances in Solid Tumors

The Woodlands Inn & Resort
Wilkes-Barre, PA
Sep 9, 2008

Conference Overview

Conference Description & Purpose

In collaboration with The Fox Chase Cancer Program at the Henry Cancer Center at Geisinger Wyoming Valley.

In order to meet the need for physician education in the community setting, the Oncology Best Practices: Advances in Solid Tumors meeting has been designed as an easily accessible, interactive educational activity for local community oncologists. This meeting will review the most recent clinical data on and practice standards for the management of advanced lung, colorectal, and renal cancers. Oncology has undergone a period of rapid change with the development of new chemotherapeutic regimens, novel formulations of existing agents, and the introduction of targeted biologic agents. In addition, new indications for previously approved drugs have dramatically expanded available treatment options for patients. Due to this rapid change, the continual dissemination of data on emerging drugs and new clinical results is imperative to keep physicians updated on the latest advances in order to maximize their ability to manage the treatment of their patients. This meeting will feature case-based lectures by regional and/or national thought leaders designed to maximize physician learning and application of new knowledge to clinical practice. Ample time will be provided for participants to discuss their questions and practical concerns about how to integrate new agents, regimens, and supportive therapies into their current practice.

Target Audience

This educational activity is directed toward medical oncologists interested in reviewing the most recent clinical trial data on the treatment of lung, colorectal, and renal cancers. Fellows, oncology nurses, oncology physician assistants, and pharmacists interested in the treatment of these cancers are also invited to attend.

Learning Objectives

Lung Cancer:

  • Describe the current options in frontline therapy, including cytotoxic and targeted agents, for advanced-stage NSCLC
  • Apply the use of pharmacogenomic information as well as molecular markers to select optimal therapeutic regimens for NSCLC
  • Evaluate the efficacy and safety of active agents used in the treatment of relapsed metastatic NSCLC

Colorectal Cancer:

  • Debate the pros and cons of oral and intravenous fluoropyrimidines, sequential and combination chemotherapy, and continuous and intermittent chemotherapy for metastatic colorectal cancer
  • Integrate the use of biologic agents, such as anti-EGFR and anti-VEGF agents, into combination treatment with chemotherapy for previously untreated or refractory metastatic colorectal cancer based on recommendations from analyzed clinical trial results

Renal Cell Carcinoma:

  • Assess the efficacy and safety of antiangiogenic agents, multitargeted kinase inhibitors, and mTOR inhibitors in the treatment of advanced renal cell carcinoma
  • Evaluate current approaches to sequencing different active biologic agents in various treatment settings of advanced renal cell carcinoma
