Conference Overview

Conference Description & Purpose

The Practical Applications in Lung and Head & Neck Cancers meetings will cover the latest advances in the treatment of patients with lung and head & neck cancers. In lung cancer, recent developments include improved efficacy in the first-line setting with inhibitors of angiogenesis or EGFR signaling, as well as novel cytotoxic regimens. In head and neck cancer, new approaches to multimodality therapy, including induction chemotherapy and targeted agents, have yielded improved survival. Recent data also point to emerging subtypes of head and neck cancer. This series of meetings will discuss these important advances and their implications for the community oncologist.

Target Audience

This educational program is directed toward medical oncologists and hematologists interested in reviewing the most recent clinical trial data on the treatment of thoracic malignancies. Surgical and radiation oncologists, oncology nurses, and other individuals interested in the treatment of lung and head & neck cancers are also invited to attend.

Learning Objectives

Lung Cancer:

  • Apply the use of pharmacogenomic information to the selection of optimal therapeutic regimens in non–small-cell lung cancer
  • Assess the safety and efficacy profiles of novel antifolate-based chemotherapy regimens in previously untreated advanced non–small-cell lung cancer
  • Evaluate the safety and efficacy of consolidation chemotherapy following first-line doublet chemotherapy for metastatic non–small-cell lung cancer.
  • Discuss the optimal integration of targeted agents, including inhibitors of EGFR and angiogenesis, into chemotherapy regimens in metastatic non–small-cell lung cancer
  • Discuss novel agents in development for the treatment of non–small-cell lung cancer
  • Enumerate active agents used in the treatment of relapsed non–small-cell lung cancer and compare the efficacy, activity, and safety of each
  • Choose appropriate treatment options for patients with lung cancer based on clinical data and individual patient characteristics

Head and Neck Cancer:

  • Identify the implications of HPV infection on the pathogenesis of and response to treatment in oropharyngeal head and neck cancers
  • Evaluate the safety and efficacy of induction chemotherapy followed by chemoradiation therapy for patients with locally advanced head and neck cancer
  • Analyze the role of anti-EGFR therapy in the treatment of locally advanced and recurrent/metastatic head and neck cancer
  • Summarize early-phase results with antiangiogenic agents and multitargeted kinase inhibitors in head and neck cancer
