Current Trends in Breast Cancer

The Westin Galleria Dallas
Dallas, TX
Jan 17, 2009

Conference Overview

Conference Description & Purpose

The Current Trends in Breast Cancer symposium will address critical new and controversial issues in the local and systemic treatment of patients with breast cancer, with an emphasis on new data presented at recent major international oncology meetings. The goal of this symposium is to provide oncologists with current practice-changing data to aid them in providing optimal care to their patients with breast cancer. Controversial and emerging topics, including optimal adjuvant and neoadjuvant therapies, the evolving role of HER2- and angiogenesis-targeted agents, current and future uses of breast cancer genotyping, and the optimal treatment of metastatic breast cancer, will be addressed. The symposium will also focus on new agents in development that will have an impact on the natural history of breast cancer. Case presentations and panel discussions will allow participants to discuss current controversies in the treatment of breast cancer with the faculty.

Target Audience

This educational program is directed toward medical, surgical, and radiation oncologists interested in the treatment of patients with breast cancer. Fellows, nurse practitioners, nurses, physician assistants, and pharmacists in oncology interested in the treatment of breast cancer are also invited to attend.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this symposium, you should be able to:

  • Identify and apply the most recent breast cancer treatment data from major international oncology meetings
  • Review the optimal choices of adjuvant and neoadjuvant chemotherapy for patients with breast cancer
  • Discuss strategies for optimizing the use of adjuvant endocrine therapy, including the management of side effects
  • Describe how breast cancer genotyping will likely impact the future treatment of breast cancer
  • Distinguish HER2 as a predictive factor and determine the optimal use of HER2-targeted agents in early-stage breast cancer, including patient selection criteria
  • Discuss current therapeutic interventions for patients with metastatic breast cancer
  • Evaluate the use of novel targeted agents, such as inhibitors of the VEGF, ErbB, or mTOR signaling pathways, in patients with advanced or metastatic breast cancer
  • Assess the value of emerging agents currently being investigated as therapies for breast cancer, including novel cytotoxic agents such as epothilones, halichondrin B analogues, and vinca alkaloids and new formulations of conventional cytotoxic agents
  • Review new data on toxicity management during breast cancer treatment
  • Assess the role of diet and exercise in the prevention of breast cancer recurrence
