Oncology CME- and CNE-Designated Symposium

Presented by Physicians’ Education Resource in Conjunction With Duke University School of Medicine

The Duke Debates: Controversies in the Management of Patients With Hematologic Malignancies symposium is intended to update physicians, advanced practice nurses, pharmacists, physician assistants, and other health care providers on advances in lymphoma, leukemia, multiple myeloma, myelodysplastic syndromes, and supportive care. Through didactic presentations, pro/con debates, and case studies, the audience will participate in discussions concerning the diagnosis and management of a variety of hematologic malignancies. In addition to the main session, small-group breakout sessions will address advanced practice nursing, pharmacy, and hematopathology.

This educational program is directed toward medical oncologists, hematologists, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and pharmacists interested in the treatment of hematologic malignancies. Other health care professionals who are interested in the treatment of hematologic malignancies are also invited to attend.

At the conclusion of this symposium, you should be able to:

Practical Hematopathology Breakout for Physicians:

  • Review advances in molecular pathology that are applicable to hematologic malignancies
  • Discuss current treatment options for the management of hematologic malignancies
  • Integrate new treatment approaches into the management of hematologic malignancies

Practical Management Issues Breakout for Nurses and Pharmacists:

  • Discuss current and new treatment options for the management of hematologic malignancies
  • Evaluate advances in supportive care, including the prevention of tumor lysis syndrome; the mobilization of stem cells for transplantation; and the management of iron overload, anemia, and neutropenia, for patients with hematologic malignancies
  • Describe new treatment options for the management of hematologic malignancies
  • Assess the impact and current role of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in hematologic malignancies

  • Describe new treatment options for the management of hematologic malignancies.
  • Assess the impact and current role of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in hematologic malignancies
  • Evaluate advances in supportive care, including the prevention of tumor lysis syndrome; the mobilization of stem cells for transplantation; and the management of iron overload, anemia, and neutropenia, for patients with hematologic malignancies
  • Describe controversies regarding the administration of growth factor support in the management of hematologic toxicities
