Third Symposium on Upper Gastrointestinal Malignancies

The Sofitel Philadelphia
Philadelphia, PA
Sep 6, 2008

Conference Overview

Conference Description & Purpose

The Third Symposium on Upper Gastrointestinal Malignancies is designed to update practicing medical, radiation, and surgical oncologists; gastroenterologists; nurses; and other clinicians on the broad advances made in the prevention, early diagnosis, and therapy of upper gastrointestinal malignancies in recent years. This symposium has been designed as an educational and scientific meeting that will provide cutting-edge updates on the biology, diagnosis, and multidisciplinary management of these diseases. Controversies and changes in treatment paradigms for these diseases will be reviewed. Investigational agents and targeted therapies will be discussed, including the context for their potential application in the treatment of upper gastrointestinal malignancies. This interactive symposium will include didactic sessions and case-based discussions with leading faculty that will address the clinical and surgical management of hepatocellular carcinoma, pancreatic cancer, and gastric and esophageal cancers. This symposium will promote education and collaborative investigation to advance the treatment standards for upper gastrointestinal malignancies within community practice.

Target Audience

This educational program is directed toward medical, surgical, and radiation oncologists; gastroenterologists; internal medicine and primary care physicians; and fellows interested in hepatocellular, pancreatic, gastric, and esophageal cancers. Nurses, physician assistants, and other individuals interested in the treatment of upper gastrointestinal malignancies are also invited to attend.

Learning Objectives

  • Summarize clinical trial data on the surgical and clinical management of hepatocellular carcinoma in the adjuvant and advanced settings
  • Evaluate the impact of targeted therapies on the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma
  • Discuss current concepts in the biology and pathology of pancreatic cancer
  • Interpret current clinical data on surgical and chemotherapeutic treatment strategies for pancreatic cancer
  • Debate the potential clinical benefit from and impact of antiangiogenic and EGFR-targeted agents on the efficacy of conventional chemotherapy in patients with pancreatic cancer
  • Assess treatment choices for neuroendocrine cancers
  • Compare chemotherapeutic approaches to and surgical strategies in the treatment of gastric and esophageal cancer in the adjuvant and neoadjuvant settings
  • Discuss molecular targets for novel agents in the treatment of gastroesophageal cancers and the role of those targets in the disease process
