Eighth International Congress on Targeted Therapies in Cancer

Renaissance Mayflower Hotel
Washington, DC
August 21-23, 2009

Conference Overview

Oncology CME-Certified Congress

The Eighth International Congress on Targeted Therapies in Cancer has been designed to provide participants with cutting-edge information on novel targeted anticancer therapies now being developed, highlighting the mechanisms of action of and the most current clinical data on those agents. The congress will detail the multiple signaling pathways that are disrupted in cancer as well as novel targeted approaches that specifically affect aberrant signaling in tumor cells, such as the mTOR pathway; agents targeting the tumor microenvironment, including vascular-disrupting agents and angiopoietin as well as VEGF inhibitors; agents targeting molecules involved in developmental pathways; and agents that harness the immune system to combat neoplastic disease. Clinical applications of novel imaging techniques will be discussed. The congress will also cover novel therapeutic and drug discovery platforms and will explore efforts to use combinatorial approaches to fine-tune the effectiveness of monoclonal antibodies. Furthermore, a preview of new agents on the horizon for specific tumor types will be presented.

As the burgeoning field of targeted therapies continues to evolve, there is a clear need for physicians to be continuously updated on the most recent efficacy and safety data on these new classes of agents. The congress will use didactic learning and panel discussions to provide an educational program that allows physicians to keep abreast of these rapid developments.

This educational program is directed toward medical oncologists, translational researchers (both MDs and PhDs), and drug developers from academia and industry interested in cancer drug development. Other health care professionals interested in the treatment of cancer are also invited to attend.

At the conclusion of this congress, you should be able to:

  • Assess targeted approaches for patients with triple-negative breast cancer
  • Discuss tumor hypoxia as a target for cancer therapy
  • Describe the feasibility of novel approaches, including vascular disrupting agents and inhibitors of fibroblast growth factor, HIF1α, c-Met, and neuropilin
  • Discuss approaches to disrupting the cell cycle and inducing apoptosis in cancer cells
  • Describe potential applications of the Cancer Genome Project on drug development
  • Explain the rationale for micro RNAs in cancer therapy
  • Assess the use of biomarkers to predict toxicity with therapeutic regimens in cancer
  • Summarize the biology of cancer stem cells
  • Evaluate data with inhibitors of Notch, Hedgehog, and Wnt signaling pathways
  • Assess the role of imaging in the development of new anticancer agents
  • Describe novel approaches to phase I trial design
  • Discuss approaches to inhibit the PI3-Kinase/AKT/mTOR axis
  • Evaluate data with novel multitargeted kinase inhibitors
  • Appraise new approaches to immunoglobulin-related agents in cancer therapy, including immunoconjugates, bispecific antibodies, and peptibodies
