Conference Overview

Oncology CME-Certified Meeting

The Practical Updates in Oncology symposium brings together academic and community physicians for the purpose of educating participants on the state-of-the-art clinical management of a wide variety of solid and hematologic malignancies. Lectures will highlight cutting-edge information and emerging treatment strategies for specific tumor types, followed by new clinical trial designs and case-based panel discussions on practical disease management. The Ethics session will cover key issues in patient communication and shared decision making. This meeting presents an opportunity for continuous dialogue and interaction between academic thought leaders and community oncologists.

The presentation “Ethics Lecture: Decision Making and Communication in the Modern Medical Environment” has been designated by Physicians’ Education Resource for 1 hour education in medical ethics and/or professional responsibility.

This educational program is directed toward medical, radiation, and surgical oncologists with an interest in recent advances in the treatment of solid tumors as well as hematologic malignancies. Fellows, oncology nurses, oncology physician assistants, and pharmacists are also invited to attend.

At the conclusion of this symposium, you should be able to:

  • Discuss the significance of clinical and molecular characteristics in choosing therapies for patients with solid tumors
  • Assess recent data on HER2-targeted agents, angiogenesis inhibitors, and novel cytotoxic agents in the treatment of breast cancer
  • Compare various chemotherapy and/or targeted agent combinations in the treatment of newly diagnosed and relapsed/refractory NSCLC and SCLC
  • Describe current data on proteasome inhibitors, immunomodulatory agents, and newer agents for multiple myeloma
  • Assess the optimal use of immunochemotherapy in the treatment of non-Hodgkin lymphoma and chronic lymphocytic leukemia
  • Assess current data on optimizing the use of antiangiogenic agents, multitargeted kinase inhibitors, and mTOR inhibitors in renal cell carcinoma
  • Identify results of recent clinical trials that are currently applicable to the management of patients with hormone-refractory prostate cancer
  • Evaluate the current chemotherapeutic options and the potential of targeted therapies for the treatment of ovarian cancer
  • Assess the efficacy and safety of targeted agents, such as multitargeted kinase inhibitors, anti-VEGF agents, and anti-EGFR therapies, in the treatment of hepatocellular, pancreatic, gastroesophageal, and colorectal cancers
  • Assess the ethical concerns involved in patient communication and shared decision making
