Emerging Strategies in Women’s Cancers
Omni San Francisco Hotel
San Francisco, CA
November 14, 2009
Conference Overview
Summary and Purpose
CME-Certified Symposium
The Emerging Strategies in Women’s Cancers symposium has been designed to provide participants with cutting-edge information on the screening, diagnosis, and treatment of malignancies affecting women worldwide. This forum will focus on clinical and translational research in breast, ovarian, and cervical cancers, discussing not only standards of care and current guidelines, but also highlighting the most promising novel chemotherapeutics and targeted agents. Advances in diagnosis, prevention strategies, and risk assessment will also be addressed, particularly with regards to the role of tumor biology and genetics. For patients with breast cancer, increased cytotoxic and targeted therapeutic options require physicians to stay updated on the optimal incorporation of novel therapies into standard treatment regimens. The role of endocrine therapy in prevention and treatment of breast cancer is also expanding, further complicating the benefit-risk ratios for patients with hormone receptor-positive disease. Controversies in the combined modality approaches and chemotherapeutic management of ovarian carcinomas and issues revolving around prevention and treatment strategies for cervical cancer will also be discussed. The conference will use didactic lectures and case-based discussions to provide participants with ample opportunities to learn from and interact with key opinion leaders in the field.
Additional CME Accreditation and Credit Designation Information
Registered Nurse: The California Board of Registered Nursing accepts AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ toward license renewal. On the BRN license renewal form, report the number of hours you attended (up to XX hours of credit) and fill in “CME Category 1” for the provider number.
California AB 1195: This activity complies with California Assembly Bill 1195, signed November 2005, requiring continuing medical education courses with patient care components to include curricula in the subject of cultural and linguistic competency. The planners, speakers and authors of this CME activity have been encouraged to address issues relevant in their topic area.
Target Audience
This educational program is directed toward medical, gynecologic, surgical, and radiation oncologists. Fellows, oncology nurses, oncology physician assistants, and pharmacists interested in the treatment of breast cancer and gynecologic malignancies are also invited to attend.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this symposium, you should be able to:
- Describe the role of epigenetics, genetic mutations, and polymorphisms in the development of breast and gynecologic malignancies
- Outline the role of human papilloma virus (HPV) in the epidemiology and prevention of cervical cancer
- Compare the utility of molecular assays as prognostic and predictive tools to traditional clinicopathologic criteria for risk assessment in patients with early-stage breast cancer
- Summarize the latest clinical evidence concerning the use of estrogens and selective estrogen modulators for the prevention of breast and gynecologic cancers
- Describe the current screening and diagnostic procedures for breast and gynecological cancer based on the inherent biological characteristics of each tumor type
- Assess the current treatment options for patients with ductal carcinoma in situ, including surgery and systemic therapy
- Review the latest clinical data concerning the use of chemotherapy and endocrine therapy for patients with breast cancer, including investigational cytotoxic and endocrine agents
- Examine the efficacy and safety of targeted therapies in patients with early-stage or metastatic breast cancer, including HER2-targeted therapy, antiangiogenic therapy, and novel agents
- Identify the therapeutic options and treatment challenges for patients with breast cancer-associated brain metastases
- Examine the latest clinical data concerning the treatment of newly diagnosed and recurrent ovarian cancer, including cytotoxic and novel targeted therapies
- Assess the role of neoadjuvant therapy in drug discovery and treatment decision-making for patients with breast or gynecological cancers
- Discuss the optimal treatment regimens for cervical cancer
- Examine the role of bone-preserving therapy in patients receiving treatment for early-stage breast cancer
- Refer appropriate patients to promising clinical trials
