Conference Overview
Summary and Purpose
CME-Certified Regional Symposium
The New Developments in Lung and Head & Neck Cancers regional symposia are intended to update community oncologists and thoracic surgeons on recent advances in the management of lung and head & neck cancers. Recent developments in the use of targeted agents, including anti-EGFR, antiangiogenic, and novel agents, in lung cancer will be discussed. Additionally, maintenance therapy following frontline treatment and efforts to individualize treatment according to histology and pharmacogenomics will be addressed. An overview of efforts to optimize chemotherapy for lung cancer will also be presented. In head and neck cancer, new approaches to improve systemic therapy through the use of predictive markers, targeted agents, and induction regimens will be discussed. Case-based discussions will be held throughout the meeting, and there will be ample time for interaction with the faculty.
Target Audience
This educational program is directed toward medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, and thoracic surgeons specializing in lung and head & neck cancers. Fellows, nurses, physician assistants, and pharmacists in oncology who are interested in the treatment of these cancers are also invited to attend.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this symposium, you should be able to:
- Assess the role of tumor histology and biomarkers in predicting response to treatment in NSCLC
- Describe the correlation between biomarkers and treatment outcomes in head and neck cancer
- Discuss the efficacy of adjuvant/neoadjuvant chemotherapy in patients with early-stage NSCLC
- Summarize the efficacy and adverse event profiles of treatment regimens incorporating targeted agents in locally advanced NSCLC
- Discuss the efficacy and toxicity profiles of induction regimens for locally advanced head and neck cancer
- Assess the efficacy and safety of targeted agents in patients with head and neck cancer
- Identify approaches for the optimal integration of novel targeted agents, including inhibitors of angiogenesis and EGFR, into the treatment of advanced NSCLC
- Describe the efficacy and safety of maintenance therapy following frontline treatment in advanced NSCLC
- Discuss the efficacy and safety of therapeutic regimens for recurrent/metastatic head and neck cancer
