Sixth Annual Symposium on Controversies and Clinical Challenges In Lymphoma, Myeloma, and Leukemia

Pointe Hilton Tapatio Cliffs
Phoenix, AZ
September 11-12, 2009

Conference Overview

Summary and Purpose

Oncology CME-Certified Symposium

Presented by Physicians’ Education Resource in conjunction with the Virginia G. Piper Cancer Center at Scottsdale Healthcare.

Treatment for the various hematologic malignancies is rapidly evolving with advances such as new chemoimmunotherapeutic regimens, novel tyrosine kinase inhibitors, and improved induction regimens. As these next-generation agents and approaches are associated with improved survival and/or reduced toxicity compared to earlier regimens, it is critical that physicians stay up to date with these therapeutic advances to provide their patients with the best possible care. The Sixth Annual Symposium on Controversies and Clinical Challenges In Lymphoma, Myeloma, and Leukemia is designed to address these gaps in knowledge for practicing medical oncologists and hematologists and will transmit recent advances and new data on the treatment and management of lymphoma, myeloma, leukemias, and other hematological malignancies.  Additionally, controversies in management of these diseases will be discussed both in the form of didactic lectures with panel discussions, as well as case-based discussions with interactive response system capabilities. Emphasis will be placed on discussion of current issues in the treatment of hematologic malignancies in a practical context, focusing on conveying the key findings from recent meetings, which will most directly impact optimal physician practice. Case discussions and patient management will be highlighted, providing a forum to discuss and debate the controversies and practical applicability of the evolving clinical trial findings.

Target Audience

This educational program is directed toward medical oncologists and hematologists. Oncology fellows, oncology nurses, oncology physician assistants, and pharmacists in oncology who are interested in the treatment of cancer are also invited to attend.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this symposium, you should be able to:

  • Describe recent advances in the management of aggressive non-Hodgkin lymphoma
  • Appraise new treatment strategies, including the use of monoclonal antibodies, histone deacetylase inhibitors, and proteasome inhibitors, for patients with low-grade and T-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma
  • Discuss evolving treatment options, including regimens containing proteasome inhibitors, immunomodulatory agents and novel formulations of anthracyclines, for newly diagnosed and relapsed/refractory multiple myeloma
  • Identify controversies regarding the administration of growth factor support in the management of hematologic toxicities
  • Appraise next-generation tyrosine kinase inhibitors and other novel agents in the management of patients with chronic myeloid leukemia who develop resistance to initial therapy
  • Discuss the safety and efficacy of immunomodulatory and hypomethylating agents, growth factors, and novel agents in the optimal management of myelodysplastic syndromes
  • Assess novel treatment regimens, including the use of monoclonal antibodies in combination with growth factors, purine analogues, and other targeted agents, in the management of chronic lymphocytic leukemia
  • Evaluate the efficacy and safety of novel agents, including farnesyltransferase inhibitors, purine nucleoside analogues, and kinase inhibitors, in the management of acute leukemias
  • Discuss approaches to thromboprophylaxis and other supportive measures in conjunction with targeted agents in hematologic malignancies
