Conference Overview

Oncology CME-Certified Symposium

This activity is presented by Physicians’ Education Resource in conjunction with NewYork-Presbyterian, The University Hospital of Columbia and Cornell.

The Current Trends in Genitourinary Malignancies regional symposium is designed to provide state-of-the-art information on the clinical management of bladder, kidney, and prostate cancers. Current concepts in surgical, chemotherapeutic, and multimodality approaches to the treatment of bladder cancer will be presented with an emphasis on practical clinical context to facilitate integration into practice. The latest insights into the biological basis of the pathogenesis of renal cell carcinoma and trial data pertaining to the use of novel and second-generation antiangiogenic agents will be presented. Experts will discuss relevant data for the selection of appropriate therapy for individual patients with advanced kidney cancer in multiple settings. Data regarding the molecular elements of prostate cancer and the clinical management of patients with PSA relapse and high-risk localized disease will be covered. Participants will review available clinical data concerning conventional chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, novel targeted and combination therapy, and immunotherapy for the treatment of advanced and hormone refractory prostate cancer. In addition, this symposium will include updates on relevant ongoing clinical trials evaluating new therapeutic regimens for the treatment of the different genitourinary malignancies. This interactive symposium will include didactic sessions, case-based learning, and panel discussions with leading faculty who will offer their opinions regarding the clinical challenges practicing physicians face today.

The purpose of this activity is to inform participants of the latest advances in the treatment of genitourinary malignancies and to promote their integration into the practice setting as well as to describe future directions in research and clinical trials.

This educational program is directed toward medical oncologists, surgical oncologists, radiation oncologists, urologists, internal medicine and primary care physicians, and basic research investigators interested in the treatment and management of patients with kidney, bladder, and prostate cancers. Fellows, oncology nurses, oncology physician assistants, and pharmacists interested in the treatment of genitourinary malignancies are also invited to attend.

At the conclusion of this symposium, you should be able to:

  • Describe the molecular biology underlying the pathogenesis of renal cell carcinoma
  • Discuss the role of androgen receptors and genetic defects in the progression of prostate cancer
  • Explain the biological basis underlying the predisposition of prostate cancer to metastasize to bone, and discuss the use of bone-targeted therapeutic agents
  • Evaluate and integrate state-of-the-art management of superficial, invasive, and metastatic bladder cancer, including surgical options and chemotherapy regimens in the neoadjuvant, adjuvant, and advanced disease settings
  • Incorporate appropriate antiangiogenic therapies such as multitargeted kinase inhibitors and mTOR inhibitors for advanced renal cell carcinoma based on patient characteristics and prior therapy
  • Integrate updated concepts for multimodality treatment, including hormonal therapy, chemotherapy, radiation therapy and surgery, into the management of patients with localized and high risk prostate cancer
  • Apply appropriate taxane-based chemotherapy for the management of hormone refractory prostate cancer
  • Evaluate emerging treatment options including cytotoxic and targeted agents for localized and advanced bladder cancer
  • Appraise the current status of sequential versus combination therapy options for advanced renal cell carcinoma
  • Assess the efficacy and safety of novel agents and combination regimens targeting angiogenesis in the treatment of renal cell carcinoma
  • Evaluate the role of cytotoxic agents that inhibit the cell cycle and novel agents that target the tumor vasculature or the endothelin signaling system in the treatment of hormone refractory prostate cancer
  • Assess the role of investigational treatment regimens and novel agents in the treatment of genitourinary malignancies
  • Select appropriate patients for enrollment on clinical trials
