Conference Overview

Summary and Purpose

Presented by Physicians’ Education Resource in conjunction with the Virginia G. Piper Cancer Center at Scottsdale Healthcare.

The Fifth Annual Symposium on Controversies and Clinical Challenges in Myeloma, Lymphoma, and Leukemia is designed to update practicing medical oncologists and hematologists on recent advances in the treatment and management of lymphoma, myeloma, leukemia, and other hematologic malignancies. Controversies in the management of these diseases will be discussed in the form of didactic lectures with panel discussions as well as case-based discussions with interactive response system capabilities. Emphasis will be placed on discussion of current issues in the treatment of hematologic malignancies in a practical context, focusing on conveying the key findings from recent meetings that will most directly impact physician practice. Case discussions and patient management will be highlighted, providing a forum in which to discuss and debate the controversies surrounding and the clinical applicability of evolving clinical trial findings.

Target Audience

This educational program is directed toward medical oncologists and hematologists. Oncology fellows, oncology nurses, oncology physician assistants, and pharmacists in oncology who are interested in the treatment of cancer are also invited to attend.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this meeting, you should be able to:

  • Discuss controversies and challenges in previously untreated and relapsed indolent and aggressive NHL, including the role of PET scans in driving treatment decisions for patients with DLBCL
  • Assess current and emerging treatment options for the management of NHLs, including low-grade lymphoma, DLBCL, MCL, and CTCL
  • Discuss the role of TKIs in the treatment of newly diagnosed CML
  • Assess recent clinical data on second-generation kinase inhibitors and other new agents in overcoming resistance to initial TKI therapy in CML
  • Discuss controversies and challenges in the management of acute leukemias
  • Summarize the biology, therapeutic options, and diagnostic tools available for the management of JAK2+ myeloid diseases
  • Discuss the role of stem cell transplantation in the management of lymphoma, CML, CLL, and MM
  • Assess emerging treatment options for newly diagnosed and relapsed MM, including novel agents such as proteasome inhibitors and immunomodulatory agents
  • Discuss challenges in MM, including risk stratification, treatment of bone disease, Waldenström macroglobulinemia and smoldering myeloma, and the role of maintenance therapy
  • Appraise current treatment options for the management of CLL in both younger and older patients
  • Define the supportive care issues for patients with hematologic malignancies, including management of venous thromboembolism, iron overload, and the use of growth factors and anti-infective agents
