CME-Certified Conference

Now in its second year, The Sixth Vital Sign: What Every Oncologist Should Know About Molecular Oncology conference will explore the paradigm of linking mechanisms of action of novel therapeutics to specific tumor genetic and host clinical features, thereby unifying molecular diagnostics and therapeutics. The goal of this program is to communicate the emerging concept of personalized cancer diagnostics and therapeutics, with an emphasis on drug discovery and applications in defined populations. An additional goal is to demonstrate how to apply currently available diagnostic and treatment modalities in a biologically relevant fashion in order to maximize benefit and minimize harm, a process referred to as the “Sixth Vital Sign.” The conference will include didactic presentations to create awareness and increase knowledge. Case presentations will also be used to help participants explore how to integrate the information into practice through the use of realistic patient scenarios. In addition, there will be opportunities for interaction through the use of audience polling and discussion. Question-and-answer sessions will give participants the opportunity to reflect on their practice patterns and discuss barriers to implementation with their peers.

This educational program is directed toward medical, surgical, and radiation oncologists and hematologists practicing in the community or academic setting who are interested in recent advances in the treatment of solid tumors and hematologic malignancies. Fellows, nurse practitioners, nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists, researchers, and other health care professionals interested in the treatment of cancer are also invited to attend.

At the conclusion of this conference, you should be able to:

  • Discuss the role of tumor genomics and molecular biomarkers in cancer diagnosis and treatment
  • Identify novel techniques that aid in the detection and diagnosis of tumors
  • Select novel targeted therapies that optimize efficacy and minimize side effects based on specific biological and clinical scenarios
  • Assess toxicities associated with novel targeted agents and strategies for personalized management
  • Evaluate clinical trial and translational methodologies and properly use them in clinical investigational decision making and patient management
