October 8-10, 2010

Conference Overview
Overview and Purpose
The Ninth Annual Controversies in Breast Cancer: Adjuvant and Neoadjuvant Therapy congress will address emerging data that underlie the optimal management of early-stage and locally advanced breast cancer. The congress will include an in-depth discussion of the increasing number of breast cancer subtypes that challenge oncologists. A significant emphasis on case discussions and new data supporting adjuvant and neoadjuvant treatment options will provide a forum for discussion of the practical applicability of evolving clinical trial findings. Other topics pertaining to predictive biomarkers, staging, risk assessment, toxicity management, and survivorship will also be addressed.
The purpose of this congress is to provide an update on the latest advances in the management of early-stage and locally advanced breast cancer and to address key areas of controversy concerning treatment in those settings.
Target Audience
This educational program is directed toward medical, surgical, and radiation oncologists interested in the treatment of patients with breast cancer. Fellows, nurse practitioners, nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists, researchers, and other health care professionals interested in the treatment of breast cancer are also invited to attend.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this congress, you should be able to:
- Discuss breast carcinogenesis and the impact of germline mutations and breast cancer biology on patient management
- Review recent insights into subtypes of breast cancer, including HER2+ and triple-negative subtypes
- Assess strategies for breast cancer risk reduction, such as screening, prophylactic surgery, and chemoprevention
- Utilize tumor subtypes, clinical criteria, and gene profiling tools to assess recurrence risk; predict benefit; and select adjuvant chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, or HER2-targeted therapy for individual patients
- Optimize preoperative treatment plans for patients using emerging data on neoadjuvant therapies and breast cancer subtypes
- Review the benefits and limitations of contemporary surgical and radiation therapy techniques for optimizing the benefit-risk ratio for local therapy
- Discuss adjuvant endocrine options for premenopausal and postmenopausal patients, including the timing and sequencing of selective estrogen receptor modulators and aromatase inhibitors in adjuvant regimens
- Integrate bone-targeted agents into adjuvant regimens for appropriate patients to prevent treatment-related bone loss
- Assess the rationale for and clinical data on the use of bone-targeted agents to prevent disease recurrence
- Evaluate data from recent adjuvant chemotherapy clinical trials to optimize and individualize the treatment of patients with early-stage breast cancer
- Apply guidelines and supporting data to the use of targeted therapies for early-stage breast cancer in order to optimize patient selection and therapeutic benefit
- Assess the efficacy of novel agents in aggressive breast cancer
- Guide patients with early-stage breast cancer to promising clinical trials
