Fifth Annual Symposium on the Future of Lung Cancer

Hyatt Regency Reston
Reston, VA
December 6, 2008

Conference Overview

This activity is presented by Physicians’ Education Resource in conjunction with Fairfax-Northern Virginia Hematology-Oncology, P.C.

This activity is presented by Physicians’ Education Resource in conjunction with Inova Cancer Services.

The purpose of the Fifth Annual Symposium on the Future of Lung Cancer is to update attendees on both preclinical and clinical data on the most promising emerging agents and regimens currently in development for the diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer, from early-stage disease to the metastatic setting. This meeting will provide a forum for topics that will impact future strategies in lung cancer, such as the proposed revision for lung cancer staging definitions. In early-stage disease, new minimally invasive surgical techniques will be discussed, along with novel adjuvant strategies incorporating targeted agents and pharmacogenomic profiling. In advanced disease, several recent developments, such as the development of more tolerable chemotherapy regimens, the use of EGFR and angiogenesis inhibitors in the frontline setting, and the discovery of histology-dependent outcomes to chemotherapy regimens, will be discussed. As in the past, there will be an update of the novel targeted therapies in development for lung cancer. The program will include lectures and ample question-and-answer time for interaction with the faculty.

This educational program is directed toward medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, basic scientists, translational researchers, and other health care professionals with an interest in new developments in the treatment of lung cancer. Fellows, nurses, physician assistants, and pharmacists with an interest in lung cancer are also invited to attend.

At the conclusion of this symposium, you should be able to:

  • Summarize the proposed changes in the staging definitions for NSCLC
  • Describe the differences in treatment outcomes in NSCLC based upon histologic differences
  • Assess the feasibility of pharmacogenomic profiling for selecting adjuvant therapy
  • Evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of minimally invasive surgical techniques for early-stage NSCLC
  • Discuss the rationale for the addition of targeted agents to adjuvant chemotherapy
  • Integrate long-term follow-up data from adjuvant clinical trials into treatment strategies for patients with resected NSCLC
  • Describe the safety and efficacy of adding targeted agents to multimodality therapy for stage III NSCLC
  • Discuss the optimal integration of antiangiogenic and anti-EGFR agents into the treatment of patients with advanced NSCLC
  • Summarize data on novel targeted agents for lung cancer
  • Evaluate the adverse-event profile and efficacy of novel chemotherapy regimens in lung cancer
