Online Grand Rounds:
Exploiting Targeted Therapies for Improved Outcomes in Renal Cell Carcinoma

Release Date: July 24, 2009
Expiration Date: July 24, 2010

Lecture Overview

Targeted therapy is now the primary management option for advanced/metastatic renal cell carcinoma (RCC). Currently approved agents for advanced/metastatic RCC include antiangiogenic tyrosine kinase inhibitors and mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) inhibitors. Additional agents are also in various stages of clinical investigation as first-line or later therapies. While the existence of multiple therapeutic options benefits the patient, it expands the complexity of the decision-making process and creates the need to inform oncologists of the practical differences between agents, their comparative advantages and disadvantages, and patient criteria for treatment individualization and optimization.

The purpose of this activity is to review the systemic treatment options available for advanced/metastatic RCC as well as considerations in patient selection.

Presented by Physicians’ Education Resource in conjunction with the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University.

This educational activity is directed toward medical oncologists and other specialists practicing in the community or academic setting who are interested in the treatment of RCC. Physicians involved in the long-term management of cancer patients as well as fellows, oncology physician assistants, oncology nurses, research nurses, and others with an interest in the treatment of patients with RCC are also invited to participate.

Upon completion of this educational activity, you should be able to:

  • Evaluate the efficacy of antiangiogenic agents in advanced/metastatic RCC
  • Assess the clinical utility of mTOR inhibitors in advanced/metastatic RCC
  • Incorporate the current treatment algorithm for advanced/metastatic RCC based on patient risk, treatment history, and evidence from clinical trials into formulating treatment decisions for individual patients
