Online Grand Rounds:
Novel Strategies for Patients With Acute Myeloid Leukemia

Release Date: July 31, 2009
Expiration Date: July 31, 2010

Lecture Overview

The management of patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), including those with acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL), is rapidly evolving with advances in prognostic factors and treatment options. For patients with APL, the use of alternative chemotherapeutic agents has led to significant improvements in survival. For patients with AML, increased understanding of prognostic markers has led to changes in molecular classification and improvements in treatment options. Increased understanding of the role of stem cell transplantation and novel treatment approaches are also improving outcomes for patients with AML.

Presented by Physicians’ Education Resource in conjunction with the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University.

This educational activity is intended for medical oncologists and hematologists involved in the care of patients with hematologic disorders. No specific skills or knowledge other than a basic training in oncology is required for successful participation in this activity.

Upon completion of this educational activity, you should be able to:

  • Summarize the impact of adding alternative chemotherapeutic agents to induction therapy for patients with APL
  • Outline the key molecular and prognostic markers for patients with AML
  • Appraise the role of stem cell transplantation for patients with AML
  • Evaluate the efficacy of novel therapeutic agents for patients with AML
