Lecture Overview
Molecular Profiling and Decision Making in Breast Cancer: A Continual Online Learning Series is designed to provide sustained online learning for oncologists and other health care providers involved in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. In the area of molecular profiling, the recent emergence of commercially available gene profiling tools, coupled with their variable degree of benefit balanced against the short- and long-term effects of chemotherapy, creates a pressing educational need for clinicians. This educational activity is directed toward medical and surgical oncologists who counsel patients on therapeutic decisions following surgery for early-stage breast cancer. Other physicians, including pathologists, radiation oncologists, primary care physicians, and other health care providers, including nurses, pharmacists, and others who care for patients with breast cancer, are also invited to participate. No specific skills or knowledge other than a basic training in oncology is required for successful participation in this activity.At the conclusion of this activity, you should be able to:
- Discuss the molecular heterogeneity of breast cancer and the relationship of gene-based molecular profiles to clinical outcomes
- Compare and contrast different molecular profiling assays and their ability to provide accurate prognosis of patients with early-stage breast cancer
- Apply molecular profiling to patient decision making in defined clinical scenarios
- Describe the advantages and limitations of different molecular profiling assays and indications for participation in clinical trials designed to further evaluate their utility in decision making for early-stage breast cancer
