Lecture Overview
Clinical implications for these patients will be the focus of this activity, which will utilize a format that will provide the user with the ability to apply this information to defined clinical situations.
This educational program is directed toward medical, surgical, and radiation oncologists with an interest in the treatment of breast cancer. Physician assistants, research nurses, and fellows with an interest in the treatment of breast cancer are also invited to participate.
At the conclusion of this activity, you should be able to:
- Review current applications of aromatase inhibitors within various clinical settings, including patients with newly diagnosed disease, patients currently receiving tamoxifen, and patients who have completed tamoxifen within selected time frames
- Compare the safety and efficacy of the various aromatase inhibitors within selected clinical contexts
- Discuss potential mechanisms of resistance to aromatase inhibitors and the rationale for combining aromatase inhibitors with targeted agents to circumvent resistance and/or enhance efficacy
- Enumerate options for the maintenance of bone health in patients undergoing aromatase inhibitor or other adjuvant therapy as well as in those with metastatic disease
- Discuss the incidence and clinical relevance of and amelioration strategies for the adverse events associated with therapeutic agents designed to maintain bone health in women with breast cancer
