For today’s oncologists, the rapidly evolving area of targeted therapy for breast cancer leads to challenges in patient care and treatment decision making. For patients with ErbB2+ disease in the metastatic setting, disease progression following prior ErbB2-targeted therapy is common; several recent studies have addressed therapeutic options, such as utilization of small-molecule tyrosine kinase inhibitors with chemotherapy, combination regimens coupling 2 ErbB-targeted agents, or inhibitors of interrelated pathways, for this patient population. Another area of debate is treatment strategy selection for the frontline treatment of patients with ErbB2+ metastatic breast cancer. Traditionally, treatment options included an ErbB2-targeted agent with or without chemotherapy but recent studies have suggested that, for some patients, combining targeted therapy with a hormonal agent might be effective, while ongoing trials are examining the potential efficacy of all-biologic regimens combining ErbB2-directed and antiangiogenic agents. The Targeted Therapy: Increasing Therapeutic Alternatives in Metastatic Breast Cancer symposium will review and discuss the latest information on biologic therapies for ErbB2+ metastatic breast cancer. A presentation of relevant case studies and panel discussion will be used to illustrate current treatment recommendations and highlight newer therapeutic approaches as well as promote interaction and discussion about clinical issues that are still a matter of controversy.
