Exploring Therapeutic Options Over the Continuum of Metastatic Breast Cancer

Release Date: April 1, 2009| Expiration Date: April 1, 2010
Mar 5, 2009, Miami, FL

Lecture Overview

The Exploring Therapeutic Options Over the Continuum of Metastatic Breast Cancer symposium is designed to update physicians on the latest information regarding the development of the next generation of cytotoxic agents and how to integrate this information into their everyday practices. The current status of taxane-based chemotherapy in the treatment of metastatic breast cancer will be discussed. This symposium will also evaluate current options for the treatment of advanced disease that has become refractory to standard therapies, including the latest data on newer classes of microtubule-targeting drugs, such as epothilones and halichondrin B analogues, and the rationale behind the use of these agents based on the current knowledge of resistance mechanisms. Concepts regarding the optimization of treatment using established and newer cytotoxic agents in defined clinical scenarios and situations where controversies exist will be illustrated using cases and panel discussion.

This educational program is directed toward medical oncologists, surgeons, and radiation oncologists interested in the treatment of breast cancer. Physician assistants, research nurses, and fellows interested in the treatment of patients with breast cancer are also invited to participate.

Upon completion of this educational activity, you should be able to:

  • Assess the current status of both traditional and novel microtubule inhibitors with respect to efficacy, safety, and schedule optimization in the treatment of breast cancer
  • Discuss the rationale for and data on the incorporation of novel tubulin-binding agents or targeted agents into therapeutic regimens for metastatic breast cancer
  • Apply decision-making principles to specific clinical scenarios in order to optimize the benefit/risk profile of chemotherapeutic regimens for advanced breast cancer based on available data and clinical guidelines
