Lecture Overview

This on-demand Webcast is from a satellite symposium held in conjunction with the 45th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology held on May 29-June 2, 2009, in Orlando, FL.

The Individualizing Targeted Therapies for Breast Cancer in the New Decade symposium will review and discuss the latest information on targeted therapies in breast cancer, including endocrine, anti-HER2, and antiangiogenic agents in novel combinations and in patients with distinct tumor characteristics. This symposium will cover the rationale behind the use of these agents and the newest approaches to selecting targets and effectively optimizing and individualizing novel targeted therapies. By linking a base of evidence from key clinical trials and authoritative guidelines for case-based applications, this activity will provide the tools to optimize decision making in order to improve patient outcomes.

This educational activity is directed toward medical, surgical, and radiation oncologists with an interest in the treatment of breast cancer. Fellows, oncology nurses, oncology physician assistants, and pharmacists who are interested in the treatment of breast cancer are also invited to participate.

Upon completion of this educational activity, you should be able to:

  • Explain the biologic rationale behind targeted therapy and the basis for the selection of rational targets in the treatment of breast cancer
  • Review the current status of antiangiogenic therapy for breast cancer and efforts to identify and validate predictive biomarkers for this approach using genomic and proteomic technology
  • Evaluate the current use of targeted agents in combination with other biologics or endocrine therapies in patients with distinct tumor phenotypes in order to enhance efficacy or overcome mechanisms of resistance
  • Assess the rationale behind targeting novel biologic pathways in the treatment of triple-negative breast tumors
  • Discuss strategies for the optimization of individualized targeted therapy using adaptive trial design to effectively evaluate targeted agents
