Upon completion of this educational activity, you should be able to:
- Discuss the data derived from trials evaluating new combinations of proteasome inhibitors and immunomodulatory agents in the frontline treatment of patients with transplantation-eligible MM
- Assess emerging maintenance and consolidation strategies in the frontline treatment of elderly patients with MM
- Evaluate the efficacy and toxicity of investigational 3- and 4-drug combinations of targeted agent plus chemotherapy for elderly patients with MM or patients with transplantation-ineligible MM
Overview and Purpose
Remarkable progress has been made in the treatment of multiple myeloma (MM) as a result of the introduction of autologous stem cell transplantation and the incorporation of targeted agents into the therapeutic paradigm. Targeted agents are now being evaluated in patients with smoldering MM to determine whether they can provide benefit for those at high risk of disease progression. Treatment of MM has evolved from standard chemotherapy alone to more novel and efficacious doublet and triplet combinations that include immunomodulatory agents or a proteasome inhibitor. While these measures have prolonged survival, relapse remains inevitable. Newer approaches to improving outcomes include evaluation of multitargeted-agent regimens and design of novel synergistic combinations. Efforts to prolong first remission in newly diagnosed MM include appraisal of the maintenance and consolidation strategies following transplantation or first-line therapy for those who decline or are ineligible for stem cell support. The increased response rate and depth of response seen with these contemporary regimens and strategies in the frontline treatment of MM has resulted in reinvestigation of the role and timing of transplantation.
The purpose of this activity is to apprise physicians of emerging strategies in phase III evaluation in the frontline treatment of patients with MM.
This educational activity is intended for medical oncologists and hematologists involved in the care of patients with MM. No specific skills or knowledge other than a basic training in oncology is required for successful participation in this activity.
